MAMMOGRAPHY CONFUSION

Posted on: 11/23/2009

Some confusing Governmental Committee information was announced this week regarding age-related mammography guidelines.  What this announcement failed to tell you is that there was no Breast Disease Physician or Radiologist on the government panel, and that older data was utilized.

The Windsong Radiology Group has always followed established American Cancer Society guidelines, and we will continue to do so.  We take great pride in the work that we do, and believe that if patients wait for screening until the age of 50, developing breast cancers could be at significantly more advanced stage.

We will continue to work in the best interest of your continued good health.

Current American Cancer Society Guidelines:

Mammography – annually starting at age 40.  Older women and women with serious health problems should continue annual mammography regardless of age as long as a woman does not have serious chronic health problems.  Women known to be at increased risk may benefit from earlier initiation of early detection testing and/or the addition of breast ultrasound or MRI.

Clinical Breast Exam – Every 3 years for women 20-39; annually for women 40 and older by a health professional

Breast Self Exam - Monthly starting at age 20

Dr. Cynthia Fan & Dr. Janet Sung of Windsong Radiology Group are discussing the findings of a patient's digital mammogram.
